Mount Jerome

Mount Jerome opened in 1836 and was the main Protestant cemetery on the south side of Dublin. It has witnessed over 300,000 burials but it was not until the 1920's that the first Catholic burials took place there. Some of the finest funerary monuments in Ireland are to be found in Mount Jerome as well as the graves of many famous people. These include J.M. Synge, J.B. Yeats, William Wilde, Sheridan Le Fanu, Sarah Purser and Walter Osborne. Photographs of these and other graves can be found at

Books relevant to Mount Jerome include Mount Jerome A Victorian Cemetery; and a European Community sponsored book on funerary art and architecture which includes Mount Jerome as one of four cemeteries. Dead and Buried in Dublin includes a guided tour of the main historic graves.
